Tightness of the Week
SCOTT KIRBY
What does Keep It Tight mean to you?

"It is my all encompassing journey to WELLNESS. Whether that includes running 5 miles, doing one more set of squats, surfing, eating organically, reading... ANYTHING that makes my mind and body happy."

How do you Keep It Tight?

"I KIT in a variety of ways because I like to keep the body guessing and constantly challenged. My typical week of Keeping It Tight would go like this: Mon - arms, Tue - legs , Wed - run the Santa Monica stairs 15 X & take a Power Yoga class, Thu - torso (chest & back), Fri - core circuit & Power Yoga, Sat - Power Day (which includes kettle bells, plyometrics, & power lifts) ending with a bike ride to Venice Beach and back, Sun - rest! But if it's nice out I'll go for a little hike. This might seem like a lot but I enjoy every minute of it."

If you could design your own KIT shirt, what would it say?

"My T-SHIRT would say RELENTLESS 2009"

1. What do you do to Keep It Tight?
What don't  I do to Keep It Tight?  It's a mental game just as much as a physical game.  Physically, you can find me at the gym or outside keeping it tight almost every day.  I usually do core and lifting for 45 minutes and cardio fir 30 minutes.  People should know that you can train and stay fit by using your own body resistance, so to keep things fresh and non-complacent, I switch up my workouts as much as possible as far as location and different core activities.  Mentally, half the battle is staying motivated and consistent with what you seek to accomplish.  Establish a goal and stick to it!  Envision the type of body and health that you want and do what is necessary to reach that goal.

2. What does Keep It Tight mean to you?
Keep It Tight means that you are putting your health before all else.  It is a state of mind.  It means to eat healthy, stay active, and be committed to a goal.  Keep It Tight means that you sacrifice certain things in order to stay in shape and feel good about yourself.

3. What is your motivation to continue on your path of fitness?
I establish goals constantly.  If you give yourself something to work towards, I find that you will work harder than ever before in attempt to accomplish that specific goal.  For instance, if you know that you are going to Vegas in 2 months, try to Keep It Tight until that day comes.  Slow down on eating carbs, throw in some more core into your daily workout and get a ton of rest.  Before you know it, you will find yourself in top notch shape and ready to take on the City of Sin!

4. How have you changed your fitness regime over the years?
I used to be just a little guy, graduating high-school at 5'7" and only 150 pounds.  Since then, I have morphed into a 6'0" (with shoes on!), 195-pound Athletic Machine.  You could say that nature took its course... my voice went from a high octave soprano to a low pitch man voice, my atoms apple grew, got hair on my chest, whatever!  But, I mostly contribute the transformation to my commitment to maintain health, stay in shape, and Keep it Tight as F.  I didn't see the results happen overnight, but staying committed to the gym and outdoor activities paved the way to what I am today.

5. We heard that you share a love of "CT" with Palmero. Please explain.
Since I am the creator of CT, I can tell you that it is an acronym for "Couch Time".  CT means more than that.  It is a state of relaxation and recovery.  Similar acronyms that are a part of my same sort of philosophy include BT (Beach Time), ST (Sun Time), or anything "T" that incorporates body recovery.  Every time that you lift a weight or go on a run, you are tearing your muscles.  Once torn, they need to rebuild themselves and when the do, they get stronger and more cut.  RT (Recovery Time) allows that natural process to happen.  CT is a vital part of my life and daily regimen!

6.  What sorts of things/weaknesses might hinder your Tightening Goals?
The only thing that would hinder my tightening goals would be if the people that I surrounded myself with were lazy and didn't' give an F what they felt or looked like.  If you live with someone or constantly hang out with someone who is OK with being overweight, eating like crap, and claiming drinking booze and sleeping as their idea of a workout routine, it may be easier to fall into their footsteps.  I've been down that path during college, and let me tell you, it is depressing as sh*t.  Fortunately, I have been living with guys that enjoy Keeping It Tight as F for quite some time now, so I'm at a good place to say the least.

7.  You've lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego.  What city Keeps it the Tightest?
This is easy.  I feel like San Franciscans Keep It Tight when the weather is nice.  In the winter, I think they let themselves go a bit, naturally.  San Diegans definitely Keep It Tight, but they party way to much to maintain what I would call a healthy lifestyle.  Most girls are "skinny fat".  THey may look like they are fit, but in fact, they haven't worked out a day in their life and eat fast food regularly.  And the guys take steroids, so that doesn't count.  In Los Angeles, particularly on the west side of the 405, Keeping It Tight is a religion, a pastime, a duty, a necessity.  You'll find people doing pull-ups on light-posts, people participating in Yoga classes on a street median, people running any set of stairs they can find, rollerblading, biking, running on the boardwalks... it's an endless cycle in LA LA Land.  So yeah, I would say that LA definitely Keeps it the Tightest.  Having sunshine and 75 degree weather outside nearly every day doesn't hurt either!

8.  If you could design your own KIT shirt, what would it say?
Replicating LeBron James' playoff t-shirt, mine would say: "You Are All Witnesses" with the KIT logo under it.

What does Keep It Tight mean to you?

"It means being fit and keeping your body healthy, whether that's through strenuous physical activity or even just keeping your life together. I believe everyone can keep it tight as long as they are motivated by something. Maintaining health is a big key to my motivation for Keeping It Tight."

How do you Keep It Tight?

"During the week, I Keep It Tight in a number of different ways. I like to say that I keep it tight "all day every day." Sometimes I have mandatory practices for water polo involving swimming, scrimmaging, or weight lifting. But on my own, I have been getting into running a lot more. I always try to play some pick up basketball a couple times a week. I love the competition up here at Davis. I can always find good games."

Do you think you will continue to Keep It Tight after you are done playing college water polo? If so, what will you do?

"I hope I can keep on Keeping It Tight after water polo. No one wants to be loose... I will continue to run and I believe that swimming will continue to be a big part of my life just because i have been doing it for so long. I still have two more years of water polo so I'm at least guaranteed to be pretty tight for a while longer."

If you could pick one Keep It Tight slogan and put it on a shirt, what would it say?
"My shirt would have to say: Keeping It Tight... Can't stop... Won't stop..."

Lastly, which controversial athlete keeps it tighter? A-Rod or Michael Phelps?
"Michael Phelps, for sure."

What does Keep It Tight mean to you?

"It's a lifestyle. It's not just something that you do for an hour a day. I always try to vary the way I workout (the way I 'Keep It Tight' so to speak) so I don't get stuck in a rut. Some people get caught up in one thing like 'oh I just like running or I just like lifting weights'. You always gotta have a new challenge... keep your body guessing."

How does Keep It Tight enhance your abilities to perform well at work?

"I'm a firefighter so people's livelihood depends on me being in the best possible shape that I can be in. I have to be physically prepared for any situation that I face. I have to Keep It Tight."

"Keep It Vegas Tight" or "Tighter than You"

And last, but not least, with regards to our BCS poll, who Keeps It Tighter?
"USC!!!"
